How we breed.

Behind every Fire Sky animal is a deliberate genetic decision. This is the order those decisions are made in, and what each one actually involves.

01 — Trace

Know where the genetics came from.

Thirty-eight foundation cows (25) and four foundation bulls stand behind the entire South African Ankole population.

We maintain a foundational register that follows each of those numbers forward through their recorded descendants. It is the reason we can say, of any animal on Fire Sky, which of the original lines it carries and in what proportion.

That register is published in full, because tracing is only useful if it can be checked.

02 — Select

Choose animals deliberately.

In the past four years we travelled the country, took part in the auctions and accumulated over 20 bulls, from which we selected only the top four for our future breeding programme.

We had all our young bulls tested and evaluated, and we only use sexed semen produced from them through Ramsem in Bloemfontein. We acquired two young bulls from the recently imported new genetics and we are now combining them with what we believe is one of the best herds of current SA genetics.

Selection is as much about what we decline as what we keep.

03 — Combine

Create purposeful genetic combinations.

A successful mating does not simply produce a calf. It changes the genetic possibilities available to the herd.

Kyasha with Maximus produces the Omega line — A21 fertility from the dam's side, A26 from the sire's. Kyasha with Dyambo produces Dyana, a double dose of BA1 through two different foundation cows. Mosi and Kiona are near-equal blends of all three original bull lines. Each of these is a decision, not an outcome.

We are clearly traditionalists with a strong preference for the Ugandan Ankole look, but we have unashamedly catered for current interest in colour through exceptional bont, black, golden brown and grey genetics.

04 — Prove

Measure the result.

Through our extensive embryo programme, we have complete and reliable information on all fertility aspects of our animals.

We publish those results, including the ones that are inconvenient. Of every 100 oocytes committed to the transfer programme, about 22 become embryos, about 8 become confirmed pregnancies, and about 6 become calves.

05 — Preserve

Protect valuable genetics for future generations.

Sometimes it means preserving genetics because we may need them much later.

Eve was the first heifer born on our farm, from an embryo that had been frozen for sixteen years. Oberon came from the same window. Both carry original imported genetics that had otherwise gone quiet in the national herd, and both are now donating.

A sold animal is not removed from this record. It remains part of the genetic archive, because its descendants are still part of the story.

The Fire Sky Master Standard

How we classify an animal.

In time we must standardise how we define elite as South African Ankole farmers.

The Fire Sky Classification Standard assesses an animal across the categories below, with different considerations applied to cows, bulls and heifers. The scoring itself is an internal working tool. The philosophy behind it is what matters publicly.

Horn

Length, base, tip-to-tip, shape and symmetry.

Frame

Size, balance and structural correctness.

Colour

Traditional Ugandan brown through bont, black, golden and grey.

Temperament

Handling and disposition, recorded from daily work with the animal.

Fertility

Intercalf period, donor performance and conception history.

Phenotype

The observable expression of the underlying genotype.

Conformation

Legs, feet, capacity and overall functional soundness.

Breeding potential

What the animal can contribute to the next five generations.

We don't simply breed cattle. We build genetics.
